Guide for Senior Citizens

How can I clean my home to prevent the spread of COVID-19?

The COVID-19 virus is most commonly transmitted through droplets from an infected individual’s nose or mouth, and the CDC acknowledges it is possible but unlikely that COVID-19 can be transmitted from touching a contaminated object. However, regular cleaning using soap or household detergent can effectively remove most viruses on surfaces in your home. Disinfecting regularly to reduce transmission of COVID-19 is likely not needed unless an infected person has entered the home within 24 hours or someone in your household has been exposed to or has contracted COVID-19.

Daily cleaning without known exposure could include: cleaning high-touch surfaces such as light switches and door handles, using the correct cleaning products depending on the surface for maximum effectiveness (this should be indicated on the label), and maintaining proper hand hygiene to avoid contamination from touch. Cleaning your home could also be more beneficial if there’s a high rate of COVID-19 cases in your community, there is a low number of people wearing masks around you, people in your household do not practice proper hand hygiene, or if you have someone in a high risk COVID-19 infection group within your home.

If there is a person sick with COVID-19 in your home, immediately isolate them and then clean your home using the correct disinfectants for COVID-19. Clean any visibly dirty surfaces, high-touch surfaces, or any areas that may have been contaminated with bodily fluids. Always ensure that you have proper ventilation when using disinfectant products and wash your hands immediately after cleaning for at least 20 seconds using soap and water.
