Description: The Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) is in search of a part time Media Researcher for the mis- and disinformation monitoring and intervention operations of Tayo, FYLPRO’s media literacy and data innovation hub. Specifically, this temporary independent contractor position will support Tayo’s deliverables for the National Science Foundation-funded Co·Insights project, a consortium assembled by the technology non-profit Meedan to develop a unique platform that enables community organizations, fact-checkers, and academics to work together to respond effectively to harmful content targeting Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities (for more information, visit

The Media Researcher will monitor online narratives related to or trending within the Filipino diaspora, with a particular concern for false, misleading, and inflammatory content about topics such as, but not limited to, public health, racial equity and solidarity, gender and sexuality, electoral participation, criminal justice, immigration, global affairs, and transnational politics. Additionally, the Media Researcher will apply these monitoring insights to strategize with other team members on the creation of multimedia content, such as explainers, fact checks, and other culturally relevant interventions.

This role will include training on Sprout Social, Junkipedia, and other social monitoring and listening tools.  Examples of backgrounds that would be helpful for the position include media and communications studies, open source intelligence (OSINT), journalism, Asian American and Filipinx/a/o studies, and an interest in popular culture.

Classification: Part Time Remote (Temporary Contract)

Duration: 10 months/40 weeks (December 2023 to October 2024)

Hours: 10-15 hours per week

Compensation: $30/hour


- Prepare weekly and/or monthly reports summarizing insights related to mis- and disinformation targeting the Filipino American community

- Develop printed and digital case study at the end of the grant term for distribution to community organizations

- Assist in Tayo Multimedia Content Producer’s work in developing text articles, social media posts, graphics, and videos debunking mis- and disinformation narratives

- Collaborate with Tayo leadership, and as needed, members of Tayo’s racial equity and public health research teams
