The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued Safety Advisory 20-01 on April 14, 2020 with recommended actions transit agencies can take to reduce the spread of COVID-19 for public transportation employees and passengers. These actions, consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), include:
- Creating and implementing policies and procedures to reduce the risk of employees and passengers contracting COVID-19.
- Enforcing the use of personal protective equipment such as face masks for their employees, contractors, and passengers.
- Observing routine cleaning and disinfection of common surfaces shared by employees and passengers.
- Creating and implementing measures to ensure employees and passengers are separated at least six feet away from each in order to reduce the spread of COVID-19 through close contact.
- Reinforcing healthy hygiene practices for employees and passengers, including appropriate cleaning measures for transit facilities and vehicles.
