How can I protect myself if I need to run essential errands?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), here are some of the things you can do to protect yourself if you need to run essential errands:

  • First, if you are feeling sick, stay home. Ask another household member to help you run your essential errands or use online services if possible.
  • When available, order online for contactless delivery or curbside pickup.
  • If you have no choice but to go in person, choose a time when there will be fewer people, preferably early in the morning or just before closing.
  • Wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as a face mask or cloth face covering especially when you are around people who do not live with you and when you are inside a store or facility where social distancing may be difficult or there may be poor ventilation.
  • Practice good hygiene diligently, such as frequent handwashing and using at least a 60% alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds (or two Happy Birthdays) when you get home.
  • When going to the grocery store, you are encouraged to disinfect the shopping cart and bring your own bags. Maintain social distancing and minimize touching items that you would not purchase. Opt for contactless payment when available.
  • While research shows that the risk of getting COVID-19 from food products, grocery bags, or food packaging is low, it is still a good practice to wash your hands, follow good food safety practices, and regularly disinfect kitchen counters.
  • If you are getting takeout or delivery, limit your contact with the persons delivering your items. This means that when available, you should opt for contactless delivery, where they leave your package at your doorstep. Sanitize your hands after receiving deliveries or collecting mail.
  • Use online banking, when available. It is important to note that your bank may have reduced hours due to COVID-19, so it is best to call your bank to see if they are open on your preferred schedule.
  • When getting gas, disinfect all the surfaces you are going to touch and sanitize your hands.
