I or a loved one is having thoughts of suicide. What do I do?

If you are experiencing distress, having intense feelings of sadness, anxiety, or depression, and thinking of harming yourself or other people, please consider reaching out for help. You may contact any of these hotlines:

If someone you care about has reached out to you about having thoughts of self-harm or suicide, you are encourage to use the five steps of Mental Health First Aid:

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm
  • Listen without judgment
  • Give reassurance and information
  • Encourage appropriate professional help
  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies
